Why you should always wear Safety Goggles in these 6 Classes

Using safety goggles while you are dealing with experiments in science glass is essential for a safe, active learning environment. However, choosing the right goggles and using them in the right way is critical to ensure the lab experience is a good as well as a safe one.

Are you looking for safe, reliable and affordably safety goggles, glasses and so much more? Contact L&A Safety, your one stop shop for all your safety clothing and equipment. Contact us today on 021 552 0665 or visit one of our branches in Milnerton, Robertson or Vredenburg.

Science labs and classes aren’t that dangerous, but when you’re working with strong chemicals, fast moving objects and other foreign materials, there is a high chance of accidents and injuries. Different labs and science classes have different risks depending on the types of experiments performed and the equipment used…

Biology. Dissections may need sharp instruments that could cause cuts and hazardous bodily fluid spills. Preservation chemicals used on tissue cultures can also be toxic.

Chemistry. Strong chemicals and chemical reactions can create fumes, splashes and dust that can irritate and damage your eyes. Dropping test tubes, beakers and flasks can also create dangerous shards of glass.

Anatomy. Students in more rigorous anatomy classes may encounter human bodily fluids or may be growing dangerous cultures that could cause infections and injury when in contact with your eyes.

Physics. These classes may use rolling, falling or thrown objects to measure different physical laws, and eye protection is necessary to safeguard against this.

Earth Systems. Studying ecology, geography, and other Earth sciences may lead to experiments with sharp objects, toxic plants, or other items best kept safely away from the eyes.

Geology. Advanced geology may break rocks to examine their strata and sharp objects and rock dust can irritate or injure eyes.

Damage to your eyes does not heal as easily as damage to other parts of your body like your hands. So, make sure you take the proper precautions and wear your safety goggles.

3 Shocking Workplace Eye Injuries that can occur if you don't wear Eye Protection!

Wearing eye and face protection in the workplace is important, especially when there is a high probability that you can prevent the injury from occurring by wearing the correct PPE.

How do eye injuries happen?

> Striking / scraping injuries. Majority of injuries to the eyes happen when tiny particles or objects strike the eyeball or scrape it. This can be caused from a variety of materials including dust, dirt, cement, metal, wood, etc. Large objects can also strike or scrape your eyes, causing blunt-force trauma.

> Penetration injuries. Nails, staples, wood and metal are all dangerous objects that can go through the eyeball and result in serious injuries such as permanent blindness.

> Chemical / thermal burn injuries. Chemicals and cleaning products are common causes of burn injuries to the eyes. Thermal burns often occur due to using a welder without the proper protection, these burns can seriously damage the eyes!

For most eye protection requirements, the average safety glasses will do just fine and they generally have side shields to protect from flying objects. While safety glasses can protect your eyes from hazards, they do not offer your eyes complete protection like safety goggles do. Safety goggles offer a seal against the fact that protects the eyes from dangerous objects as well as contaminants and chemicals!

Stop using these Safety Excuses!

If you have been a safety professional for a while, you’ve probably heard all the safety excuses in the world. They can range from the most ignorant excuse to the absolute absurd. Yet we continue to hear them.

Make sure to check out L&A Safety for a wide range of quality safety wear and equipment, don't make any excuses - order today!

Part of a safety professional’s job is to get these people to understand that by making excuses they are actually putting lives at risk. Here are some of the most common safety excuses.

I’ve been doing it this way for xxx yearsOkay I’m pretty sure that every single person has heard this one before! Old-schoolers are very resistant to change, that’s why they believe that what they have been doing for all those years is okay. Just because a man has never died before from falling doesn’t mean he should never wear fall protection.

Seemed like a good idea at the timeDid it? You should never buy into this excuse. This statement shows that certain employees never stopped to think before what they were about to do. One of your biggest tools in your toolbox should always be planning.

I have a job to do / I wasn’t thinking / I forgotThis excuse shows that the worker does not take their own safety very seriously. If a worker has this attitude they have not been properly educated on the risks of their job, they probably need training and quickly!

This is how I was told to do it / the boss said…If this excuse is accurate then you may have a problem and the supervision is putting the workforce in serious danger. First you have to get the employee to understand that they have a say in their own safety and they need to speak up, especially if they feel they have been forced into a dangerous situation.

You caught me the ONE time I did this
This excuse is actually quite funny. How many times have you seen a worker the ONE time they weren’t wearing their safety goggles. The fact of the matter is, if you catch somebody during an inspection, odds are they’ve done the exact same thing before when you weren’t around.

Sometimes the worst thing about these safety excuses is that the companies or workers actually believe them. Part of being in the safety profession is to understand that an excuse is an excuse and it can lead to dangerous accidents.

Why is it so Important to Wear Safety Goggles

Related imageSafety goggles are generally worn to protect the user from dangers objects and chemicals. They come in all shapes and sizes, depending on what they are protecting the wearer from.

Let’s take a look at why safety goggles are so important…

There are a number of reasons why safety goggles are so important. Firstly if you work with hazardous materials and chemicals you can handle them without the fear of possibly damaging your eyes. Safety goggles also protect the wearer from anything falling or flying into their eyes.

For example should your be welding and sparks are flying, your safety googles are the only thing protecting your eyes. Another example could be an explosion in a science lab – you could be potentially blinded or seriously injured without safety goggles.

If you are in doubt about whether you should be wearing your safety goggles are not, it’s better to just wear them and be safe than sorry. If you find It difficult to remember wearing them at all times, simply put them on every time you enter the construction site, garage, laboratory or where ever your place of work may be.

How to Maintain your Safety Glasses – 8 Easy Tips

When it comes to certain workplaces, safety glasses are a vital piece of PPE. Even while you mow the lawn or play on the sports field, safety glasses serve the same purpose – to protect your eyes!

And like any other PPE, they need to be maintained to ensure they last a long time. L&A Safety supplies a wide range of excellent PPE, including a range of safety glasses. Visit the website now - www.landasafety.co.za

Follow these 8 simple steps:

ü  Clean them everyday – Whether you rinse them under water or wipe them off with a damp cloth, it will get rid of any debris or dust that may have accumulated.

ü  Use lens cleaner – Water is the simplest way to clean your safety glasses, but lens cleaner gets rid of the stuff water cannot.

ü  Clean the sides and ear pieces – You will be shocked at how dirty these parts of your glasses can get.

ü  Don’t use abrasive cleaners – Glasses become unwearable when you use rough clothes to clean them because scratches will damage the lenses

ü  Don’t use regular household cleaners – Glass cleaner and things like kitchen cleaner can really damage your safety glasses. Rather use the above cleaning methods.

ü  Inspect them daily – Look out for cracks and any broken pieces, these can be dangerous if an accident happens.

ü  Use storage – The best place to store your glasses is in a hard case or pouch. If you don’t want to buy one an old sock is another option!

ü  Replace them when need be – Damaged or scratch safety glasses are a serious safety hazard. When your lenses are scratched they will impair your vision and if they are cracked they’ll lose the ability to protect your eyes as they should.

Always provide your workers with a well-stocked cleaning station to make sure everyone keeps their safety glasses in good working condition.

What’s so special about safety glasses?

You may be asking yourself, “Why do I need special safety glasses?” or “Why can't I just wear my regular glasses?"

There are three very important features of safety glasses:

1. The frames on safety glasses are so much stronger than typical glasses and are built to prevent the lenses from being pushed into the eyes and potentially damaging them.

2. Safety glasses have impact resistant lenses. If a large object were to hit you in the face, the last thing you want to deal with is a shattered lens being pushed toward your eye.

3. Safety glasses have side shields. Some safety glasses wrap around your face to prevent objects from being able to get to your eyes, while other safety glasses have clear, impact resistant side shields affixed to the frames. Either style is perfectly acceptable.

There are numerous styles of safety glasses, and in many cases, eyeglass manufacturers offer impact resistant prescription lenses. If you wear eyeglasses, this may be an option to discuss with your eye doctor. Additionally, many safety glasses have UV protection, which make them doubly advantageous when woodworking outdoors.

Whatever style you choose, always remember to put your safety glasses on when you enter the workshop. If you develop this habit from the outset, you'll actually feel somewhat "naked" if you try to do anything in the workplace without them.

Contact L&A Safety, or visit their stores in Milnerton or Vredenburg for a wide range of safety wear and equipment. From safety glasses and gloves to boiler suits and work boots - we have it all!
